The Once Upon A Time Medieval program will be available from March 20th-April 26th, 2012 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays only.
Dressed in Medieval costumes, students will participate in an interactive and hands-on program highlighting skills of Medieval life.
Brass rubbings - students will learn about the customs and traditions of the Medieval population and create rubbings of tombstones while learning about the symbolism in the brasses.
Illuminations – students will learn about book making and how monks created the beautifully bound copies that we see in Museums today. They will get to create a beautiful letter that could go at the beginning of a page in one of those books.
Chain mail – students will learn about the role of the blacksmith and how chain mail was created. They will make their own small piece of chain mail and learn how coins were made prior to the invention of current technology. They will get to hold real chain mail and take a coin home with them.
Catapults & Mystery Box - students will discuss the types of warfare and how to create a catapult and then make their own in groups. They will test them against other students’ catapults to see whose travels the furthest. Then they will each make a catapult to take home with them using a single design. They will also get the chance to handle Medieval artifacts and determine what they are. They will use their problem solving skills to figure out what the object is and what it was used for.
At the end of the day we also have a knighting ceremony where a student (picked by the teacher) is chosen to be knighted. They get to try on the chest and head pieces of chain mail and are knighted with a sword.
We are still offering an optional Medieval monastery style meal for an extra cost. This lunch includes apple juice, potato soup, a bread bowl, chicken legs, and oatmeal cookies. It is a great addition to the program and the students have the chance to experience life as a monk.
This is our most popular program – book early to avoid disappointment! The program will be offered Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from March 20th-April 26th, 2012
