Outta this World
Special guest, John Hlynialuk from the Bluewater Astronomical Society
How cool is an invisible, odourless, tasteless gas? About 78.5 degree BELOW Zero that’s how cool! And in its solid form as dry ice, it has some very interesting properties. It can put out flames and make metal squeal. It can create floating bubbles full of fog. It can make smoke rings that shoot across the room and mess up your hair. Dr. Albert will demonstrate the neat properties of CO2 in this presentation and finish off by making a comet right before your eyes. It just doesn’t get any cooler than that!
Fur, Fins, and Feathers
Special guest, Wild Ontario with Birds of Prey
It’s a bird, it’s a plane, no wait…it IS a bird! Wild Ontario has many feathered friends, and they want to share their stories with you. Whether it’s the beautiful, yellow eyes of an owl or the bald, wrinkly head of a vulture that captures your imagination, you will be sure to have a memorable experience! You won’t even realize how much you’re learning!

John Hlynialuk is a retired high school teacher who taught science and math in both Bruce and Grey County high schools. He has been an avid stargazer since his teens when his interest in photography led him to take pictures of the starry sky, comets, the moon, northern lights and solar and lunar eclipses. Several of his photographs have been published in national astronomy magazines and he contributes columns on sky events and astronomical images to local publications.
John has been a member of the Bluewater Astronomical Society since it started and continues to work to promote knowledge of the wonders of the night sky. He and other members of the astronomy club provide astronomy programs for students and the general public at the ES Fox Observatory which has been bringing stargazing opportunities since May of 2011. The Fox Observatory is located at the Bluewater Outdoor Education Centre which has been declared a Dark Sky Preserve, one of only 17 in Canada.
Wild Ontario’s education programs aim to foster love and appreciation for Ontario’s incredible wildlife and wild spaces. They use live birds-of-prey to teach about science and help people make connections to nature. They discuss biology, ecology, ornithology, conservation and stewardship in a manner that everyone can understand and appreciate. They believe that learning should be fun above all else!
The passion and enthusiasm of their staff is infectious, and an encounter with their birds is unforgettable. Their unique stories spread the word about our impact on wildlife, and how to turn it from negative to positive. Whether it’s the beautiful, yellow eyes of an owl or the bald, wrinkly head of a vulture that captures your imagination, you will be sure to have a memorable experience! You won’t even realize how much you’re learning!
