SUMMARY:How to Trace Ancestors Through Letters and Postcards\, with guest Kathryn Lake Hogan
DESCRIPTION:WEBINAR via Zoom \nFamily history goes beyond vital statistics; it’s about listening to the voices of our ancestors. Letters\, postcards\, telegrams\, and other everyday forms of communication bring personal experiences to life and add context that official records often lack. Learn how to find these materials in archives\, local collections\, and family holdings\, and interpret them as historical evidence. Discover how to analyze handwriting\, postmarks\, and even the language of telegrams to trace migration\, community connections\, and family ties. Diaries\, autograph books\, and early phone directories will also be highlighted as sources that capture ordinary lives. Attendees will leave with strategies to uncover and preserve these fragile yet powerful records of daily life. \nRegister HERE: https://bit.ly/2026-02-09-KathrynLakeHogan \nHosted by Bruce County Genealogical Society.

SUMMARY:Researching the 160th\, Through Military Records & Genealogical Websites With guest speaker\, Kent Kraemer
DESCRIPTION:November 10 | 7:00 PM (Virtual Via Zoom) \nIn researching the 160th Canadian Overseas (Bruce) Battalion\, military records were an invaluable tool. These personnel files contained\, not only\, personal information of the soldier\, but also that of their family. Their service history includes enlistment and discharge dates\, rank\, unit assignments\, and information about injuries sustained. \nMore information was needed to fully tell the stories of these men. Local history books and archival newspaper articles provided additional insights\, however\, genealogical sites helped complete the picture. The addition of census data\, marriage\, immigration and death records all contribute to bringing their soldiers to life. \nRegister HERE: https://bit.ly/2025-11-10-KentKraemer \nFB: 160th Bruce Battalion: https://www.facebook.com/160thBruceBattalion \n____ \nAbout Kent Kraemer \nAlthough born and and raised in Toronto\, Bruce County has always been ‘up home’.  His dad was born in Greenock and mom in Holyrood.  As a student\, he spent his summers farming in Kinloss and Kincardine Townships\, first for his uncle and then with his brother.  As a sales professional and entrepreneur\, he has experience in the brewing\, gaming\, automotive and insurance industries throughout North America.  The highlight of his career being the founding of a craft brewery in Niagara. \nHe became interested the 160th Bruce Battalion in 2007 and formed a Facebook page chronicling the battalion’s history in November 2015.  Researching the 160th involved searching many local\, provincial and federal archives.
