SUMMARY:Sugarcane Documentary Screening
DESCRIPTION:September 18 | 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM  \n  \nThe National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a time to honour the history\, cultures\, and languages of First Nations\, Inuit and Métis peoples\, and to acknowledge the profound and enduring impact of the residential school system on Survivors\, their families\, and communities. Ahead of this day\, the Bruce County Museum & Cultural Centre will be screening the National Geographic documentary Sugarcane (2024\, R).   \nRuntime: 1 hour 47 minutes  \nRating: R  \nFREE to attend; Preregister to save your seats.  \n  \nREGISTER >>\n   \nAbout the Film  \nA stunning tribute to the resilience of Native people and their way of life\, SUGARCANE\, the debut feature documentary from Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie\, is an epic cinematic portrait of a community during a moment of international reckoning.  \n In 2021\, evidence of unmarked graves was discovered on the grounds of an Indian residential school run by the Catholic Church in Canada. After years of silence\, the forced separation\, assimilation and abuse many children experienced at these segregated boarding schools was brought to light\, sparking a national outcry against a system designed to destroy Indigenous communities. Set amidst a groundbreaking investigation\, SUGARCANE illuminates the beauty of a community breaking cycles of intergenerational trauma and finding the strength to persevere.  \n

SUMMARY:NOW OPEN: A National Crime: The Residential School System\, Local Saugeen Ojibway Nation Impacts
DESCRIPTION:EXHIBIT NOW OPEN \nSeptember 15 – November 30  \n  \nFrom the early 1830s to 1996\, over 150\,000 First Nations\, Inuit and Métis children\, some as young as four years\, were forced to attend residential schools funded by the Canadian government and administered by the churches.   \nThe Residential School System consisted of at least 139 schools across the country and was part of a genocidal national strategy to remove Indigenous Peoples from their lands\, to destroy their cultures and traditions\, and to assimilate them into the dominant culture. The mental\, physical\, and spiritual abuses suffered by these children have had a deep impact\, not only on the children themselves\, but also on their families\, their communities\, their descendants\, and on Canada as a nation.   \nOver 300 children from Saugeen First Nation and Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation were forceably removed from their homes and communities to attend these schools. Children were sent great distances away across Canada (Ontario\, Manitoba\, Saskatchewan) and into the USA (Michigan).  \nWARNING: This exhibition contains subject matter that may be disturbing to some visitors and may be triggering. Please call 1-866-925-4419 or your local crisis line for counselling and support.  \nThe Bruce County Museum & Cultural Centre\, in partnership with the Legacy of Hope Foundation\, Saugeen First Nation\, and Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation\, are pleased to bring this exhibition and local perspective to the region.  \nProudly presented by Enbridge.

SUMMARY:TIFF Film Circuit: Meet the Barbarians
DESCRIPTION:September 5 | 7:00 PM  \nOur 2025 TIFF Film Circuit series kicks off with a screening of Meet the Barbarians\, a 2024 French-language comedy directed by Julie Delpy. Laying bare a number of Western hypocrisies\, this amusing satire looks at what happens when a small town in France\, expecting to welcome a family of Ukrainian refugees\, is instead greeted with refugees from Syria.  \n  \nREGISTER >>\n  \nAbout the Film \nA small town in France preparing to welcome a Ukrainian refugee family is surprised when a Syrian family shows up instead. As the Fayad family finds its footing in a village very much set in its ways\, both townspeople and newcomers must rethink their preconceptions. Will the local businessman hold onto his xenophobic views? Can the Fayads bridge the gulf between their lives in war-torn Syria and their current disappointments in France? Will even the town’s crusading progressive (played by writer-director Julie Delpy) descend into petty barbarism? Meet the Barbarians strikes just the right balance of humour\, ideas\, and heart in this classic comedy of integration.  \nRuntime: 1 hour 41 minutes  \nComedy\, drama  \nContent advisory: sexual content  \nFrench with English subtitles. \nMembers FREE; $8.00 adults\, $6.00 seniors.
