  • Access Conditions

Researchers are reminded that they are working with unique and fragile historic documents. The following conditions help preserve and protect our documents.

    1. Only pencils are permitted as writing utensils.

    2. Photocopying is permitted at fees established through County by-law, if reproduction is allowed by donor agreements and copyright legislation. Copies will not be permitted if copying would cause damage to an item. Only BCM&CC staff will photocopy materials retrieved from archival storage, unless researchers are advised otherwise by staff.

    3. Access to records is not guaranteed for researchers who have not booked an appointment. To ensure access to the records you would like to view, book an appointment and call or email archives staff in advance to discuss your research needs.

    4. Researchers should handle one archival record at a time, and keep all records in the existing order.

    5. Please handle the records with extreme care. For example,
    – Do not place other items on top of archival records
    – Do not force books open or bend/fold records
    – Do not write on archival records

    6. Wear cotton gloves when handling primary materials, as instructed by Archives staff.

    7. Copies (hardcopy or digital) are to be used solely for research or private study. Any use of copies for a purpose other than research or private study may require the authorization of the copyright owner of the work in question. The researcher assumes the sole responsibility for any infringement of the literary rights, copyrights, privacy or other rights that pertain to these records.

    8. If publishing material from the archives, with permission of the copyright holder, citation should include at least: Institution, object identification number, and collection title. Example: Bruce County Museum & Cultural Centre, A2003.032.001, Smith family fonds.

    9. The BCM&CC is not responsible for the content of any archival materials and makes no representations as to the accuracy or completeness of archival materials.
