Our success is made possible, in part, by the support we receive through our strong relationships with you, our donors. Your generosity ensures that we will continue to inspire, educate and remain the premier destination of choice for exploring our history.

Volunteers are the building blocks of our Museum. All our activities and programs depend on the assistance of dedicated volunteers.

  • Access Conditions

Researchers are reminded that they are working with unique and fragile historic documents. The following conditions help preserve and protect our documents.
    1. Each new researcher will complete and submit a Registration Form and show photo ID if requested by staff. By doing so, the researcher agrees to observe the rules and guidelines set out in this form and posted on the Research Room bulletin board. Returning patrons will fill in the Daily Sign-In Register or provide their name to Archives staff upon arrival, thereby acknowledging continued agreement with the rules and guidelines.
    2. Access to the Research Room is by appointment only at this time.
    3. Only pencils are permitted as writing utensils.
    4. Only Bruce County Museum & Cultural Centre (BCM&CC) staff will enter or retrieve records stored in the archival storage room. At this time, researchers will also refrain from browsing in the Research Room and staff will retrieve all resources for them.
    4. When items are requested from the archival storage area, a Call Sheet must be completed, listing each item retrieved for a researcher from the storage area.
    6. All materials must remain in the Research Room at all times.
    7. Researchers must use only one box at a time and remove only one folder at a time. Keep all records in the existing order.
    8. Records must be handled with extreme care and never be written on, traced, bent or folded. Cotton or nitrile gloves are available to use when handling primary materials, as instructed by Archives staff.
    9. The BCM&CC reserves the right to restrict the use of records that are of exceptional value, extremely fragile, that are not arranged, or that are in the process of being arranged. The BCM&CC will also deny access to anyone who acts in a disruptive manner or who fails to comply with these access conditions or the posted Research Room rules and guidelines.
    10. The BCM&CC is not responsible for the content of any archival materials and makes no representations as to the accuracy or completeness of archival materials.
    11. Photocopying is permitted if it is in accordance with donor agreements and copyright legislation. Copies will not be permitted if the item is especially fragile or valuable and copying would cause notable damage. Only BCM&CC staff will photocopy materials retrieved from archival storage, unless researchers are advised otherwise by staff.
    12. Copies (hardcopy or digital) are to be used solely for research or private study. Any use of copies for a purpose other than research or private study may require the authorization of the copyright owner of the work in question. The researcher assumes the sole responsibility for any infringement of the literary rights, copyrights, privacy or other rights that pertain to these records.
    13. If publishing material from the archives, with permission of the copyright holder, citation should include at least: Institution, object identification number, and collection title. Example: Bruce County Museum & Cultural Centre, A2003.032.001, Smith family fonds.
  • Personal information submitted will be used only for the purposes of operating the Research Room and Archives, and will be managed in accordance with the requirements of the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
