12 Days of 2022

12 Days of 2022

During the last #12Daysof2022, we’re highlighting some of our favourite moments from the year!

Deep Dives

In 2022, we went deep diving through the Museum’s collection to highlight artefacts that don’t often have the opportunity to be displayed and showcased in an exhibit. Check out season 1 and 2, now available on our website.

Cultural Demonstrations

During this summer’s Cultural Demonstrations at the Museum, we learned about Indigenous teachings, stories and practices, welcoming local Indigenous Elder Shirley John, Natalka Pucan, Trish Meekins (Nikaanaganaa Counselling & Learning Centre ), and Chef Zach Keeshig (Naagan by Zach keeshig) —who joined us on the Museum back patio for a special demonstration on field dressing a rabbit (pictured here) and introduced us to some delicious Indigenous fare!

Sonic Sensation Scream Chamber

While out chatting with you at events throughout the summer, we heard so many of you say testing out the Scream Chamber, part of our Sonic Sensations exhibit, was one of your favourite moments. We can’t agree more! We hope you had a blast learning about and experimenting with the science of sound and hearing this year.

Consider making your year-end donation in support of Museum services that help educate, inspire, and encourage exploration right here at home in Bruce County!

Spirit Seeds Exhibit

Summer saw the opening of our second feature exhibit Spirit Seeds: A Celebration of Indigenous Beadwork, curated by renowned Indigenous artist Naomi Smith.

This exhibit featured beautiful objects decorated with tiny glass beads, called “Little Spirits” in some First Nations languages. The tradition of beadwork began when Europeans brought enchanting glass beads as an item of trade and continues today as an important part of Native life and artistic expression.

Newspaper Digitization Project

A huge accomplishment for the BCM&CC in 2022 was the completion of the Museum’s expansive Newspaper Digitization Project, with over 12,000 newspapers from 25 different Bruce County newspaper titles, dated generally between 1861-1930, now available for viewing online.

We’re looking forward to sharing lots of interesting highlights from these digitized papers on social throughout 2023, but in the meantime, we encourage you to spend some time during the holidays browsing for yourself! .

Collections Highlight: The watch of Captain John Spence

During 2022, Collections continued to grow its online presence. More than 350 objects were added to the online collection, including 25 new donations comprised of 55 items, including this one: the watch of Captain John Spence (2022.018.001 a-c).

This watch was awarded to Captain John Spence of Southampton by the President of the United States for his efforts in the rescue of the American propeller New York. The New York got into trouble during a storm in October of 1876. Captain Spence, along with his crew on the Nemesis, rescued all the sailors but one.

March Break

March Break was a blast this year with lots of family-based activities, including fun with wildlife, magic, astronomy and science. These are a few snapshots from the week as we got up close with birds of prey, explored animal anatomy, and dissected owl pellets!

Looking for more family-based programming? Our February 2023 Animal Antics Family Day Show is already open for registration!

Archives and Research Room Highlights

Throughout the year, our Archives team was hard at work, helping to connect people (YOU!) with historical information both in-person and online. Browse our online collection from home: brucemuseum.pastperfectonline.com/

Sponsors and Partners
This year, we were grateful to welcome a few new sponsors to our list of supporters including: Georgian College, Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) and Blair Law Firm.

Sponsors and community partners are critical to our success, and we are grateful to have such a supportive group behind us. These partnerships enable us to create dynamic programs and bring experiences to life for our community to enjoy here at the Bruce County Museum & Cultural Centre! Thank you!

80th Anniversary of World War II

With 2022 marking the 80th Anniversary of World War II, the Museum displayed a brand-new diorama depicting the contributions of Canadians to the war effort via land, air and sea—an incredible piece produced by our friends historian Mat Johnson (Marathon of History ) and Randy Schnarr.

If you missed either of the talks we held this year on the Dieppe Raid or with Canada’s Top War Historian and author Tim Cook, you can now find them on our YouTube Channel!
There is still time to make your year-end donation! Visit brucemuseum.ca or call today at 519-797-2080 to make your donation TODAY! All donations of $20+ will receive a tax receipt for the full amount!

Volunteer Appreciation Brunch

In the fall, we hosted an Appreciation Brunch for volunteers in recognition of the dedicated work they give to all areas of the Museum!
Special certificates were presented to four of the highest earning volunteers (100+ hours) during the COVID-19 pandemic, including Muriel Shular, Dwight Clarke, Brenda Vanderploeg, and Tania Gilchrist. MPP Lisa Thompson was in attendance, along with Saugeen Shores Mayor Luke Charbonneau, both emphasizing that volunteers are the bedrock of a strong and prosperous Community.

Happy New Year!

As we get ready to make 2022 a piece of history, we want to say a special thank you to our members and everyone who visited us this year who helped make it one for the books!
We’ve got a ton of upcoming programming planned and we can’t wait to welcome you through our doors in 2023. Happy New Year!
