Kayoshk

Decked Sailing Canoe, ca.1890

The Kayoshk has spent most of her life zipping around the Oliphant Bay area. Sailed by various families and generations, this decked sailing canoe was an Oliphant Regatta champion for many years running. She was built in Wiarton around 1890 and has now been restored by the Marine Heritage Society of Southampton.

The Kayoshk’s name comes from the Ojibwemowin word gayaashk, a singular, animate noun meaning “seagull”.

Special thanks to donor George Heigenhauser for this special donation to the Museum.
