TIFF Film Screening: Riceboy Sleeps

October 18 @ 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm

TIFF Film Series

October 18 | 7:00 PM

Our TIFF Film series continues with a special screening of Riceboy Sleeps, a 2022 Canadian drama directed by Anthony Shim. This poignant film offers a heartfelt exploration of the Korean immigrant experience and the bond between a mother and her son.

We will be joined by starring actor Ethan Hwang for a special appearance and Q&A session after the screening, providing a unique opportunity to delve deeper into the film’s themes and production.

About the Film

Riceboy Sleeps follows the story of So-Young (Choi Seung-yoon), a Korean immigrant single mother who moves to Canada to provide a better life for her teenage son, Dong-Hyun (Ethan Hwang). Based in part on Shim’s own childhood, the film captures the challenges and triumphs of their journey. Shot primarily in the Greater Vancouver Area with some scenes in South Korea, Shim employs long takes to create a deeply immersive and emotional narrative.

The film premiered at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival, where it won the Platform Prize. It has won awards across the globe including those from the Busan International Film Festival, the Directors Guild of Canada, Vancouver International Film Festival, Glasgow Film Festival, the Canadian Screen Awards among others.
