WEBINAR (Virtual via Zoom)
The ever-curious Bonnie once stumbled upon a charming black-and-white photo in her archive — a group of smiling young women perched on the running board of an old car. Flipping it over, she found the intriguing caption: “Farmerettes 1946.” As she delved deeper into their story, Bonnie became captivated by the rich and often overlooked history she was uncovering. She realized this was a story worth sharing.
In 2019, Bonnie and Shirleyan English co-authored Onion Skins and Peach Fuzz: Memories of Ontario Farmerettes. Their work inspired a stage play, performed on two stages in 2024. Thanks to Bonnie’s persistent advocacy, a Farmerette postage stamp was issued for Remembrance Day in 2024. Now, the story has reached the screen: the 50-minute documentary We Lend a Hand: The Forgotten Story of the Ontario Farmerettes, directed by Colin Field, brings to life the remarkable contributions of some 40,000 teenage girls who volunteered on Canadian farms and played a vital role in helping win the Second World War.
