Furniture Manufacturing Shaped Bruce County Communities
Bruce County’s furniture industry has deep roots. Beginning with individual furniture-makers, in the earliest years of settlement, the industry grew to support many companies who impacted the local economy and day-to-day lives of families across the region.
These companies created innovative products, responded to local and national furniture needs, and provided jobs, and supported retail furniture stores, local sawmills, and suppliers. The Archives continues to receive inquiries from across the country from people looking for information about family furniture heirlooms built in Bruce County.
During the World Wars, furniture and wood product companies like Andrew Malcolm Furniture, Kincardine; Bell Furniture, Southampton; Krug Bros. Co. Ltd., Chesley; Maple Leaf Aircraft Corp. Ltd. (formerly Lucknow Furniture), and Dominion Plywoods Ltd., Southampton contributed products towards the construction of wooden ammunition crates and aircraft.
Although most of these historical companies had closed by the 1980s, others now carry on the tradition of woodworking and furniture design in the region.
The resources preserved in the Bruce County Archives help bring story of historical furniture companies to life.
